Inside a Siddha Apothecary

Five generations, twenty herbs, one iron kadai. The slow medicine of the Palani foothills.

Padma Vaidyar is the fifth in her family to practise Siddha medicine — the indigenous Tamil tradition that predates Ayurveda by several centuries, depending on which scholar you ask.

Her family workshop is a single room behind her house in Palani. The walls are lined with glass jars, hand-labelled in Tamil, holding herbs she has either grown or wild-harvested herself. Her most-asked-for product is Kuzhambu Thailam — a hair oil cooked in an iron kadai with twenty herbs over a slow wood fire for nine hours.

The recipe is unchanged since 1900. Padma will not write it down.
